Pont de la Margineda: A Medieval Marvel

The Pont de la Margineda, located in Santa Coloma, Andorra la Vella, is a captivating bridge that has stood for centuries. Constructed in the 14th and 15th centuries, this medieval bridge is registered as a Cultural Heritage site of Andorra. It is the oldest bridge in Andorra.The bridge crosses the Gran Valira, Andorra's largest river. Its single, semi-circular arch stretches 9.20 meters, reaching a height of over 9 meters and a length of 33 meters. The archstones are made of pumice to reduce the bridge's weight, while the walls are constructed from granite. This delicate balance of materials has allowed the Pont de la Margineda to withstand floods that have damaged or destroyed other historic bridges in the nation.Historically, the Pont de la Margineda was part of the Royal Road that connected Sant Julià de Lòria with Andorra la Vella, passing through Santa Coloma. Its location at the mouth of La Portella d'Aixovall allowed the road to split, offering travelers a choice between sunny and shaded paths. Today, a sculpture by Andreu Alfaro stands near the bridge, commemorating the first Congress of Catalan Language and Literature. The bridge is a reminder of Andorra's past and present.
