Discover more about Pont de la Margineda

The Pont de la Margineda, located in Santa Coloma, Andorra la Vella, stands as a testament to Andorra's enduring history and architectural ingenuity. Constructed in the late 15th century, around 1487, this medieval bridge is the oldest in the country, a Cultural Heritage site that has connected communities for centuries. Spanning 33 meters in length and rising over 9 meters high, the bridge features a single, elegant semi-circular arch with a 9.20-meter span. Its design incorporates local materials, with pumice used for the arch stones to reduce the bridge's overall weight and granite for the walls. This thoughtful construction has allowed the Pont de la Margineda to withstand the test of time, surviving floods that have claimed other historic bridges in the region. Historically, the bridge was part of the Royal Road that linked Sant Julià de Lòria with Andorra la Vella, making it a vital artery for trade and communication. Today, it serves as a picturesque landmark and a reminder of Andorra's past. Adjacent to the bridge, a modern sculpture by Andreu Alfaro commemorates the first Congress of Catalan Language and Literature, symbolizing the connection between Andorra's historical roots and its modern cultural identity.
