Església de Sant Martí de la Cortinada: A Romanesque Gem

Nestled in the tranquil village of La Cortinada, the Església de Sant Martí stands as a testament to Andorra's rich cultural and religious heritage. This Romanesque church, dating back to the 12th century, has undergone several expansions and renovations, most notably in the 17th and 18th centuries, resulting in a blend of Romanesque and Baroque architectural styles. Originally constructed in the 12th century, the church retains its Romanesque essence, characterized by sturdy stone construction and a simple, elegant design. Over the centuries, the church's nave was altered, and its orientation was changed. The interior showcases remarkable late-12th-century murals by the Master of La Cortinada, depicting Saint Martin of Tours and other figures. The bell tower features a distinctive sawtooth decoration under its eaves. Inside, visitors can admire the colorful wooden altarpiece dedicated to Saint Martí, the patron saint of the church. Side chapels feature Baroque altarpieces dedicated to Our Lady, St. Anthony Abat, and Our Lady of the Rosary. The 17th-century wrought iron gates and wooden furniture add to the church's historical charm. Surrounding the church, you'll find examples of Andorran civil architecture, such as the Cal Pal Mill and Saw Works and the Cal Pal stately home. These sites provide additional insights into the region's traditional industries and way of life. The church is easily accessible via guided tours from mid-July to mid-September and is a stop on the Andorra Tourist Bus Route 6 from June to September.
