Discover more about Església de Sant Martí de la Cortinada

Nestled in the tranquil village of La Cortinada, the Església de Sant Martí is a captivating example of Romanesque architecture in Andorra. Originally constructed in the 12th century, the church has undergone several expansions and renovations, particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries, resulting in a blend of Romanesque and Baroque styles. The church is renowned for its well-preserved mural paintings dating back to the late 12th century. These murals, attributed to the Master of La Cortinada, depict scenes of Saint Martin of Tours, along with fantastical animals and other figures. Inside, visitors can admire a multi-colored wooden altarpiece from the 17th century, dedicated to Saint Martí, the church's patron saint. The lateral chapels feature Baroque altarpieces dedicated to Mary, Anthony of Padua, and Our Lady of the Rosary. The wrought iron gates protecting the chapels are notable examples of the region's iron industry from the 17th century. The church's architecture includes a single nave with a nearly square floor plan and a quadrangular apse. The bell tower, located at the foot of the nave, showcases a distinctive sawtooth decoration under its eaves. The orientation of the nave was changed during Baroque times. Surrounding the church, visitors can explore other elements of civil architecture, such as the Cal Pal Mill and Saw Works and the Cal Pal stately home with its white watchtower. The church attracts many visitors and tourists, with 5,289 visiting between July and August 2024.
