Discover more about Palacio de Ferro

The Palácio de Ferro, or Iron Palace, is an architectural gem located in the heart of Luanda, Angola. Believed by many to have been designed by Gustave Eiffel or someone from his firm, the palace's history is shrouded in mystery, with no official records confirming its origins. Constructed in the late 19th century, possibly in the 1890s, it's rumored to have been intended for Madagascar, but the ship transporting it was diverted to Angola. The palace boasts a unique iron architecture, showcasing metallic filigree decorations and a surrounding veranda. During the Portuguese colonial era, it served as a prestigious art center. After Angola's independence, it fell into disrepair, suffering further damage during the Angolan Civil War. In 2009, a restoration project, funded by an Angolan diamond company and carried out by Brazilian construction companies, began to revive the palace. Reopened in 2016, the Palácio de Ferro stands as a symbol of Luanda's rebirth, hosting temporary exhibitions, art shows, and cultural events. The Ministry of Culture is considering its future use, with possibilities including a diamond museum, a restaurant, or a cultural center. Today, visitors can admire the stunning architecture and explore the exhibitions within. The palace is located in the Ingombota borough, making it easily accessible and surrounded by shops and restaurants.
