Discover more about West End Pond

West End Pond, a 41-acre privately owned brackish wetland, stands as one of Anguilla's most significant Important Bird Areas (IBAs). Situated in the West End district, this serene location offers a tranquil escape into nature. Once a site for salt production, the pond now serves as a crucial habitat for a variety of bird species. The pond is divided into two sections by a causeway, which now provides easy access to tourism developments along Shoal Bay West. The eastern basin has a roughly circular shape, while the western section stretches out longer and narrower. Black, white, and buttonwood mangroves surround most of the pond, creating a rich ecosystem. Keep an eye out for American Kestrels and Gray Kingbirds, and listen for the unique sound of the Mangrove Cuckoo. BirdLife International recognizes West End Pond as an IBA due to its support for populations of royal and common terns, Caribbean elaenias, and Lesser Antillean bullfinches. The pond's mudflats attract plovers and sandpipers during migrations. In the summer, gulls and Least Terns breed here. Barn Swallows and Caribbean Martins perch on the telephone lines around the wetland.
