Cauls Pond, situated in the Sandy Hill district of Anguilla, is a rectangular brackish lagoon that provides a tranquil retreat from the island's lively beaches. Recognized as one of Anguilla's Important Bird Areas (IBAs), this 43-hectare (106-acre) wetland is a haven for diverse avian species.The pond's unique environment features a mostly limestone substrate with marl at its western end, lying below sea level and acting as a significant water catchment area. A small mudflat island sits within the pond, adding to its ecological interest. The surrounding vegetation includes cacti and buttonwood mangroves along the water's edge, with mauby, tamarind, and cedar trees growing further inland.BirdLife International has identified Cauls Pond as an IBA due to its importance as a breeding colony for least terns. It also supports populations of brown pelicans, laughing gulls, green-throated caribs, Caribbean elaenias, pearly-eyed thrashers, and Lesser Antillean bullfinches.
