Discover more about Mount Obama

Mount Obama, rising 402 meters (1,319 feet) above sea level, is located in the southwestern region of Antigua, within the Mount Obama National Park. Originally named Boggy Peak, it was renamed on August 4, 2009, to commemorate Barack Obama's historic election as the first Black president of the United States. The renaming symbolizes excellence, triumph, hope, and dignity for all people. The area has historical significance, as it served as a refuge for escaped African slaves, known as Maroons, during the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, the national park is an Important Bird Area, supporting several Lesser Antilles bird species and is an important site for soil and water conservation. Hiking to the summit of Mount Obama offers stunning 360-degree views of Antigua's coastline, lush hills, and the Caribbean Sea. The trails wind through diverse terrain, including rocky paths, lush greenery, and open spaces. The hike is considered moderately challenging, with some steep sections. The summit itself features telecommunications towers, and access to the very top may be restricted. However, the views from the surrounding area are well worth the trek.
