The Espacio Memoria y Derechos Humanos (ex ESMA) is located in Buenos Aires on the 17-hectare site that was once the Navy School of Mechanics (ESMA). During the military dictatorship that ruled Argentina from 1976 to 1983, ESMA was one of the largest clandestine detention centers in the country. It is estimated that over 5,000 people were illegally detained, tortured, and disappeared within its walls. In 2004, the site was transformed into a space for memory, truth, and justice, with the goal of investigating and publicizing the history of the former ESMA, particularly its role during the dictatorship. Today, the Espacio Memoria y Derechos Humanos is comprised of 19 public institutions, human rights organizations, and civil society groups, both local and international. These organizations work to preserve memory, promote and defend human rights, and bear witness to the crimes against humanity that occurred during the state-sponsored terrorism. The site offers a variety of activities related to the defense of human rights and the construction of collective memory, including artistic, museographic, and educational programs. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring photographs, personal stories, and artifacts that offer insight into the struggles faced by victims and their families. Guided tours of the grounds are available, providing context to the exhibits and facilitating discussions about the site's legacy. The Museo Sitio de Memoria ESMA, located in the former Officers' Casino, is a National Historical Monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
