Discover more about Instituto Nacional Sanmartiniano

The Instituto Nacional Sanmartiniano, located in the Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires, is a cultural and historical foundation dedicated to preserving and promoting the legacy of General José de San Martín. San Martín was a pivotal leader in the Argentine, Chilean, and Peruvian wars of independence. The institute was founded on April 5, 1933, by Dr. José Pacífico Otero, coinciding with the 115th anniversary of the Battle of Maipú, a crucial victory in the Chilean War of Independence. Otero, a historian specializing in San Martín, aimed to create a center for San Martín studies and disseminate his work. The institute began as a civil association operating from the Military Circle. After Otero's death, his widow, Manuela Stegmann de Otero, financed the construction of a new headquarters. The building is a replica of San Martín's home in Le Grand-Bourg, France, where he lived in exile from 1834 to 1848. The headquarters was inaugurated on August 11, 1946. The institute's mission involves historical research, educational programs, and the preservation of San Martín's memory. It offers lectures, courses, and visits for students and the general public. The surrounding plaza is named “Grand Bourg” to further evoke San Martín’s time in France. In 2017, the building and the sculpture “El Abuelo Inmortal” were declared National Historic Monuments.
