Plaza Rubén Darío, nestled in the upscale Recoleta neighborhood of Buenos Aires, offers a tranquil retreat from the city's vibrant energy. Bounded by Avenida del Libertador, Calle Austria, Avenida Figueroa Alcorta, and Avenida Pueyrredón, this urban oasis is a favorite among locals and tourists alike.Originally named Plaza Justo José de Urquiza in 1936, the space was transformed from a waterworks facility into a public square by Intendente Mariano de Vedia y Mitre. In 1997, it was renamed in honor of the Nicaraguan poet and diplomat Rubén Darío. The plaza features several notable monuments and sculptures, including the "Canto a la Argentina" monument dedicated to Rubén Darío, created by Argentine sculptor José Fioravanti. Other prominent artworks include "El Sembrador" and "El Segador" by Belgian sculptor Constantin Meunier, and works by French sculptor Bourdelle, such as "Hércules" and "El último centauro".One of the plaza's defining features is the Piletón Urquiza, a decorative pond that was part of the original waterworks. It was renovated in 2005 and reinaugurated in October 2023, becoming a popular spot for children and adults who enjoy model boating. The plaza also boasts a bridge over Avenida Figueroa Alcorta, constructed for the Exposición del Sesquicentenario in 1960, adding to its architectural interest.Adjacent to the plaza is the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, one of Argentina's most important cultural institutions. The museum, inaugurated in 1932 and remodeled by architect Alejandro Bustillo, enhances the plaza's cultural richness. In 2009, the city government inaugurated the "Paseo de Esculturas" within the plaza, showcasing temporary outdoor sculpture exhibitions.
