Getting There

  • Driving

    From Bariloche, take the third exit at the roundabout of Circunvalación and Ruta Nacional 40 (Diarco) heading south. Continue for 1.5 km, then turn right onto a gravel road. Drive 19 km along this gravel road, ascending through the Challhuaco Valley, until you reach the Domos "Espacio Neumeyer" at Cerro Challhuaco. Note that there is no public transport to this area. Check road conditions, especially after rain or snow. Parking is available at Espacio Neumeyer.

  • Taxi

    Taxis are available in Bariloche, but it's best to arrange a round trip or have a plan for your return, as taxi availability at Cerro Challhuaco is limited. A one-way taxi ride from Bariloche to Espacio Neumeyer will cost approximately ARS 5000-7000, depending on the taxi company and time of day. Confirm the price before starting your journey.

The main draw of Cerro Challhuaco is the network of hiking trails that lead to the summit. The most popular trail begins near the Domos of Espacio Neumeyer in the Challhuaco Valley. The path is well-marked and ascends through a lenga forest, where the orange amancay flowers bloom in the summer, and the lengas turn orange, red and yellow in the fall. As you ascend, the environment gradually changes to a High Andean Steppe, characterized by small shrubs adapted to the harsh conditions. From the summit, you can observe the Patagonian steppe area and the Precordillera Mountains. The views are magnificent, with the chance to spot the majestic Andean condor soaring overhead. The area is also home to the Challhuaco frog, a micro-endemic species found in the nearby Laguna Verde. Cerro Challhuaco is a good option for bad weather days or when avalanche conditions are touchy in the high mountains.
