Discover more about Carlos Alonso Museum. Stoppel House

The Carlos Alonso Museum, also called the Stoppel House, is located in the Centro district of Mendoza and serves as a tribute to the Argentine artist Carlos Alonso. The museum not only displays his works but also emphasizes the importance of contemporary art in Argentina. The Stoppel House itself is part of the museum's appeal. Built in 1912 by architect Baravino, the mansion combines Swiss chalet style with Italian influences. The facade features four columns and a large oak entrance, with exterior walls painted in a faint pink. The interior reflects an Italianate ambiance with visual symmetry and color repetition. The mansion has 1234 square meters of covered land and 2000 square meters of gardens. After belonging to Luis Stoppel, a merchant and politician, the mansion became state property and was used as the headquarters of the Patronato de Menores until 1977 before being restored and opened as a museum on March 28, 2018. The museum has two distinct architectural spaces: the Stoppel mansion and a modern three-level building in the back. The new building contains halls for exhibitions of other artists and a multipurpose room. The museum also organizes artistic events, including talks, meetings, and presentations.
