Discover more about Ichoalay Regional Historical Museum

The Ichoalay Regional Historical Museum, located in Resistencia, Argentina, stands as a testament to the rich and diverse history of the Chaco province. Established on October 12, 1949, it holds the distinction of being the oldest museum in the region, a legacy born from the initiative of educators Inés García de Marqués and Esther Machicote de Díaz. The museum derives its name from the cacique (chieftain) Ichoalay, a significant figure whose mediation facilitated the establishment of the Jesuit reduction of San Fernando del Río Negro in 1750. Originally housed within the Escuela Normal Superior N.º 87 (Sarmiento School), the museum gained independent status in September 2000, becoming a dependency of the Subsecretaría de Cultura de la Provincia (now the Instituto de Cultura), with its own entrance on Necochea 456. After undergoing extensive renovations, the Ichoalay Regional Historical Museum reopened its doors on August 30, 2013, under the auspices of the newly formed Instituto de Cultura. The revamped space features a modernized permanent exhibition hall with updated displays, furnishings, and lighting, all designed to enhance the visitor experience. The museum's collection is a treasure trove of artifacts that narrate the story of the Chaco. Highlights include weavings and pottery from the Qom, Wichi, and Mocoit cultures, offering insights into the region's indigenous heritage. Personal belongings, tools, and implements crafted by the early European immigrants illustrate the challenges and resourcefulness of the colonization era. Diplomas, medals, sabers, and uniforms provide a glimpse into the military conquest period.
