Discover more about Torre Tanque

The Torre Tanque (Tank Tower) is more than just a water tower; it's a symbol of Mar del Plata's history and architectural heritage. Constructed between 1939 and 1943, it replaced an older concrete tower from 1911 to meet the growing water demands of the city's burgeoning population. Designed by architect Cornelio Lange, the tower showcases a Tudor Revival style, harmonizing with the eclectic architecture of the Stella Maris neighborhood. The exterior is clad in Piedra Mar del Plata, a local quartzite stone, giving it a distinctive and vernacular charm. The tower's cistern has a capacity of 13,000,000 liters, while the elevated tank holds 500,000 liters. Standing 40.75 meters tall on the Stella Maris hill (approximately 88 meters above sea level), the Torre Tanque provides breathtaking 360-degree views of Mar del Plata. Visitors can ascend to the top via a 194-step spiral staircase or by elevator to reach the observation deck. From there, you can admire the city center, the beaches north of Cabo Corrientes, and the hills to the west and south. The tower was declared a National Historic Monument in 2013 and remains an operational part of the city's water supply system.
