Cerro de la Gloria, rising from within the Parque General San Martín, is one of Mendoza's most historically significant landmarks. Once called “Cerro del Pilar”, the small mount was renamed in 1913, when it was chosen as the site for a grand monument to the Army of the Andes. This 14-ton bronze sculpture, the work of Uruguayan artist Juan Manuel Ferrari, stands as a tribute to General José de San Martín and his troops, who launched their campaign to liberate Argentina, Chile, and Peru from Spanish rule. The monument, inaugurated on February 12, 1914, the anniversary of the Battle of Chacabuco, features San Martín on horseback, leading his army across the Andes. The stones used in the monument's construction were brought from Uspallata, in the high mountains of Mendoza, symbolizing the challenging terrain the army faced. The central inscription reads “La Patria al Ejército de los Andes” (“From our fatherland to the Army of the Andes”). The monument also depicts the patrician women of Mendoza donating their jewels to the Army of the Andes, and an allegorical representation of Freedom with broken chains. Visitors can explore the monument and enjoy panoramic views of Mendoza and the surrounding landscape. The site includes walking trails, picnic areas, and a parking area. Cerro de la Gloria provides a space for reflection on Argentina's rich history and the sacrifices made in the fight for independence.
