Plaza Pedro del Castillo: Mendoza's Historic Heart
Discover Mendoza's origins in Plaza Pedro del Castillo, a historic landmark with lush greenery, cultural significance, and a vibrant local atmosphere.
Plaza Pedro del Castillo is a green public space in Mendoza, Argentina, holding immense historical significance as the original site where the city was founded in the 16th century. Founded by Captain Pedro del Castillo on March 2, 1561, the plaza was the heart of Mendoza, hosting the Cabildo and significant events like the proclamation of Our Lady of Carmen de Cuyo as the patron of the Andes Army. The square is adorned with a variety of rare trees brought from Argentinian forests, Spain and Brazil. The plaza was the center of religious and social life until March 20, 1861, when a massive earthquake destroyed much of the colonial architecture surrounding it. This led to the construction of a new city center about a kilometer southwest of the original site. In 1993, the plaza was restored, along with the Museo del Área Fundacional (Museum of the Founding Area), the ruins of San Francisco, an underground chamber, and a section of O'Higgins Park. The Museum of the Founding Area displays Mendoza's origins. Today, Plaza Pedro del Castillo is a place where visitors can relax, enjoy the scenery, and connect with Mendoza's past. The surrounding area offers local shops, cafes, and restaurants, providing a taste of Mendoza's culinary scene.
