Discover more about Iguazu Falls

Iguazu Falls is one of the world's most stunning natural wonders, consisting of approximately 270 individual waterfalls stretching across 2.7 kilometers on the Iguazu River, which forms the border between Argentina and Brazil. The falls are located within two national parks: Iguazú National Park in Argentina (established in 1934) and Iguaçu National Park in Brazil (established in 1939). Both parks are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, recognized for their exceptional universal value. The name "Iguazu" comes from the Guarani or Tupi words meaning "big water". Legend tells of a deity who, enraged by a beautiful woman named Naipí fleeing with her mortal lover Tarobá, sliced the river, creating the falls and condemning the lovers to an eternal fall. The first European to record the existence of the falls was the Spanish Conquistador Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca in 1541. The falls were formed by the erosion of the Iguazu River over millions of years. The river flows over a plateau of basalt rock, and the powerful force of the water has carved out the dramatic cliffs and channels that make up the falls. The most famous waterfall is the Devil's Throat, a U-shaped chasm 82 meters high and 150 meters wide. Today, Iguazu Falls is a major tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors every year. Visitors can explore the falls from both the Argentinian and Brazilian sides, each offering unique perspectives and experiences. The Argentinian side has the largest tourist portion of the national park, with several trails and roads to explore. The Brazilian side offers a panoramic view of the falls.
