Its location on a hill made it a strategic point.During the early 19th century, the tower and its adjacent chapel were used as a fortified site by the Spanish. Later, it served as an observation post and munitions depot for the Army of the North under General Manuel Belgrano in 1812 during the Argentine War of Independence. It was also a site of combat in 1837 during the war against the Peru-Bolivian Confederation. The church was eventually demolished in the early 19th century during a royalist invasion.Today, the Torre de Santa Bárbara offers visitors stunning panoramic views of Humahuaca and the Quebrada de Humahuaca. The vibrant colors of the Andean landscape provide a beautiful backdrop to the tower's stonework.
