Discover more about Plaza 25 de Mayo

Plaza 25 de Mayo, the historical and cultural heart of Rosario, Argentina, is more than just a park; it's a vibrant gathering place steeped in history. This expansive plaza, located on the eastern edge of downtown near the Paraná River, is bordered by Santa Fe, Buenos Aires, Laprida, and Córdoba streets. The plaza's name commemorates the May Revolution of 1810, a pivotal moment that led to the first local Argentine government in Buenos Aires. Before 1852, it was simply known as Plaza Principal. The plaza is surrounded by stunning architecture, including the Beaux Arts-style Palacio de los Leones (1910), the Italian Renaissance-inspired Basilica Cathedral (1934), the ornate Bola de Nieve confectionery (1915), and the Art Nouveau former Provincial Hotel (1905). At the center stands a monumental column dedicated to national freedom, topped by a statue of Liberty and surrounded by statues of national heroes like José de San Martín and Manuel Belgrano. Sculpted by Alejandro Biggi in Carrara marble, the monument dates back to 1883. Every Thursday, the Mothers of the Plaza 25 de Mayo, a human rights group, gather to call for justice for victims of forced disappearances during the Dirty War. Pasaje Juramento, a pedestrian walkway, connects the plaza to the National Flag Memorial.
