Discover more about Cathedral Basilica Our Lady of Rosario

The Cathedral Basilica Our Lady of Rosario is a prominent landmark in Rosario, Argentina, situated in the city's oldest section, at the intersection of Buenos Aires and Córdoba streets. Facing the Plaza 25 de Mayo, the basilica is flanked by the Palacio de los Leones (municipal building) and the Central Post Office. Its location also places it across from Pasaje Juramento, a pedestrian walkway leading to the National Flag Memorial, connecting it to other significant city landmarks. The cathedral's history dates back to 1731 when the first parish was erected on the site, marking Rosario's humble beginnings as a small village. The image of the Virgin of the Rosary arrived from Cádiz, Spain, in 1773. The current basilica's construction began in 1887, based on an 1882 design, showcasing a blend of Baroque and Neoclassical architectural styles. The altar, crafted from Carrara marble, was made in Italy. The church was officially designated as a cathedral in 1934, upon the canonical establishment of the Diocese of Rosario, and later recognized as a basilica in 1966. Inside, visitors are greeted with a serene atmosphere accentuated by light filtering through stained glass windows that depict biblical scenes. Ornate altars, impressive frescoes, and statues dedicated to various saints adorn the interior. The crypt beneath the main altar houses a historic image. Regular religious ceremonies and cultural events are hosted here.
