Discover more about Ventisquero Negro

Ventisquero Negro, meaning 'black snowdrift' in Spanish, is an unusual glacier at the base of Cerro Tronador in Argentina's Nahuel Huapi National Park. Unlike typical glaciers, Ventisquero Negro is characterized by its dark brown or blackish color, a result of volcanic ash, dirt, and sediment accumulated over centuries. This striking feature makes it a captivating sight against the backdrop of snow-streaked peaks and the surrounding Patagonian landscape. The glacier is fed by the Río Manso Glacier, located a few hundred meters higher up the mountain. Ice flows down the gully and mixes with sediment, producing the glacier's dark hue. As icebergs calve from the glacier, they float in a small lake until they eventually melt, creating a dynamic and ever-changing environment. The glacier's lower portion sits at approximately 1,640 feet (500 meters) above sea level. Visitors to Ventisquero Negro can enjoy a variety of activities, including hiking and exploring the surrounding area. Trails wind through lush forests, leading to viewpoints that offer panoramic views of the glacier and the towering Cerro Tronador. The sounds of ice calving and the unique landscape create an unforgettable experience. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including diverse bird species and unique flora. The best time to visit is during the warmer months when hiking conditions are optimal.
