Discover more about Casa Histórica - Museo Nacional de la Independencia

The Casa Histórica - Museo Nacional de la Independencia, located in San Miguel de Tucumán, is a cornerstone of Argentine history, marking the spot where the country declared its independence from Spain on July 9, 1816. This national museum is housed in a colonial-era building that witnessed the Congress of Tucumán, a pivotal event in Argentina's struggle for freedom. Built in the 1760s by Diego Bazán y Figueroa, the house was originally intended as a wedding gift for his daughter. Featuring a typical colonial style, the building originally had large rooms, multiple patios, and a well. In 1874, the national government acquired the house, later using it for postal and judicial offices. Unfortunately, neglect led to the demolition of most of the building, except for the Salon de la Jura, the very room where independence was sworn. Declared a National Historic Monument in 1941, the Casa Histórica was reconstructed in 1943 to resemble its original design. Today, the museum showcases artifacts, documents, and exhibits that narrate Argentina's independence. Visitors can explore the Salon de la Jura, preserved in its original state, and view a collection of over 700 pieces, including furniture, weapons, personal items, and historical documents. The museum also features a library with a vast collection of sources and bibliography from the 18th and 19th centuries related to the history of Tucumán. The Casa Histórica offers an immersive experience, enhanced by guided tours and multimedia presentations. The museum also includes interactive displays, a video game, and the animated audiovisual series Lola y Choko, designed to engage visitors of all ages. Don't miss the "Lights and Sounds of Independence" show, an audiovisual spectacle that recounts the historical events leading up to the declaration of independence.
