Discover more about Goverment house

Located in front of Independence Square, the Government House is the most important public building in the province. Constructed between 1908 and 1910 and inaugurated on July 9, 1912, it replaced the old Cabildo (Council) as part of a modernization effort spurred by the booming sugar industry. This industry transformed Tucumán into a prominent province in Northern Argentina. The building's architecture combines French baroque with Italian classicism, symbolizing its role as a public institution. Inside, the majestic White Hall features an art-nouveau style that has hosted numerous national and international figures. The entrance hall, adorned with a large bronze chandelier, holds the remains of Juan Bautista Alberdi, a notable figure from Tucumán. Facing Plaza Independencia, the palace is one of the most architecturally significant buildings in the region. Its exterior grandeur is matched by an ornate interior, most notably the 'salón blanco' (White Room). This room, historically used for official ceremonies, features spiderweb chandeliers and ceiling panels decorated by Spanish artist Julio Vila y Prades. The remains of Juan Bautista Alberdi were moved from Buenos Aires to a crypt in the palace's basement in 1991. At night, the illuminated facade offers an unparalleled view in the city center.
