Public Transport

To reach Mylodon Cave Natural Monument via public transport, take a bus from the main bus station in Puerto Natales towards the cave. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes. Check bus schedules in advance as they may vary. The entrance to the cave is a short walk from the bus drop-off point. Bus fare is approximately 2,000 CLP.
Taxi

Taxis are readily available in Puerto Natales. A taxi ride to Mylodon Cave Natural Monument takes around 25-30 minutes. Negotiate the fare beforehand, expect to pay around 15,000 - 20,000 CLP for a one-way trip.
Driving

From Puerto Natales, take Route 9 north and after 17 km, turn left onto Route Y-290 towards the Natural Monument Mylodon Cave. After 8 km on a gravel road, you will arrive at the monument. There is a parking area available at the monument. Note that the road to Mylodon Cave may be closed for repairs.

Mylodon Cave Natural Monument, located 24 km north of Puerto Natales, Chile, offers a fascinating glimpse into the region's prehistoric past. The main attraction is the Cueva del Milodón (Mylodon Cave), a large cave where Hermann Eberhard discovered the skin, bones, and other remains of the Mylodon darwini in 1895. This giant ground sloth roamed Patagonia between 14,500 and 10,000 years ago. The cave itself is impressive, measuring over 200 meters deep, 80 meters wide, and 30 meters high. Inside, you'll find exhibits detailing the cave's history, geology, and the megafauna that once inhabited the area. A life-size replica of the Mylodon greets visitors at the entrance, providing a sense of the animal's immense size. Beyond the main cave, the monument features other smaller caves like Cueva del Medio and Cueva Chica, each with its own historical significance. The Silla del Diablo (Devil's Chair), a unique rock formation, adds to the area's mystique. Several trails wind through the monument, offering panoramic views of the Eberhard Fjord, the surrounding mountains, and glaciers. Traces of early human habitation dating back to 6000 BC have also been found in the cave. These findings suggest that the caves served as shelters for the first inhabitants of Patagonia. The monument is open year-round, with varying hours depending on the season.
