Discover more about Brown Canyon Ranch

Brown Canyon Ranch, formerly known as the Barchas Ranch, is a historic site located in the foothills of the Huachuca Mountains, near Sierra Vista, Arizona. The land was first settled around 1880 by John Thomas Brown, who owned a hotel in nearby Ramsey Canyon. The property changed hands several times before brothers James and Tom Haverty built the most prominent structure, a three-room adobe home, between 1905 and 1907. This building is now known as the Brown Canyon Ranch House. Visitors can explore the ranch house, wander along the pond, and hike the nearby trails into the Miller Peak Wilderness. The site includes a one-room adobe storeroom, a wooden corral and outhouse, and the stone ruins of a barn. The man-made ponds now serve as a preserve for the endangered Chiricahua leopard frog. A small graveyard, known as the Brown Canyon Cemetery, and the ruins of the Pomono Mine can be found further up the trail. Brown Canyon Ranch provides various recreational opportunities, including hiking, birdwatching, and picnicking. The Friends of Brown Canyon Ranch, along with the U.S. Forest Service, have been working to preserve and restore the ranch since 1998. The ranch is open to hikers and picnickers for day use and offers a sense of what the area was like in the early 1900s.
