The Maricopa County Old Courthouse, also known as the County-City Administration Building, stands as a proud monument in downtown Phoenix. Completed in 1929, it reflects the city's growth during the pre-World War II era. The courthouse was a joint project between Maricopa County and the City of Phoenix, designed to house both county and city functions in a single, large building. The building's architecture is a blend of Neo-Classical and Spanish Colonial Revival styles. Although designed as two independent buildings, one by Louisiana architect Edward F. Neild and the other by the Phoenix firm of Lescher and Mahoney, the exterior appears unified. The exterior features terra cotta and poured concrete, with bronze and polished granite details and red clay roofing tiles. The courthouse gained national attention in 1963 during the criminal trial of Ernesto Miranda, which led to the landmark Miranda v. Arizona case in 1966, establishing the "Miranda warning". The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Phoenix Historic Property Register. Today, the Old Courthouse is still an active Superior Court facility. Visitors can explore exhibits that narrate the history of Maricopa County.
