Dankworth Pond State Park is a hidden gem in eastern Arizona, offering a tranquil escape with diverse recreational opportunities. This day-use park, a sub-unit of Roper Lake State Park, features a 15-acre pond that was once a commercial catfish farm owned by the Dankworth family. Acquired by Arizona State Parks in 1975, it opened as part of Roper Lake State Park in 1982 and has since become a beloved destination for locals and visitors alike.The pond is regularly stocked with rainbow trout from October to March, making it a popular fishing spot, especially during the cooler months. Anglers can also find largemouth bass, catfish, bluegill, and green sunfish. A fishing dock provides easy access to the water, and small boats and kayaks are permitted. Gas-powered boats, however, are prohibited.Beyond fishing, Dankworth Pond State Park offers several short hiking trails. The Dankworth Pond Trail circles the pond, providing scenic views of the water and the surrounding desert. The Dos Arroyos Trail, a 1.75-mile loop, leads to a re-created Native American village, offering insights into the lifestyles of southwestern tribes. This trail also passes through a riparian area, showcasing the region's biodiversity.Birdwatchers will delight in the variety of species that call Dankworth Pond home.
