Discover more about Slaughterhouse Canyon

Slaughterhouse Canyon, also known as Luana's Canyon, is a natural ravine located near Kingman, Arizona. The canyon presents a stark and beautiful desert landscape, characterized by towering rock formations and diverse wildlife. Hiking trails wind through the canyon, offering experiences for both casual walkers and seasoned trekkers. The vibrant colors of the rocks, especially during sunrise and sunset, provide stunning opportunities for photographers. The canyon's ominous name is tied to a local legend dating back to the 1800s. As the story goes, a miner brought his family to live in a small shack in the canyon during the gold rush. He would leave for weeks at a time to find gold and food, but one month, he never returned. As the family ran out of food, his wife, Luana, was driven to madness by her children's starvation. According to the legend, she murdered her children to end their suffering, dismembered their bodies, and threw the pieces into the river. It is said that she then collapsed on the riverbank, where she died of starvation and grief. Some say that the wails of children and the screams of a woman can still be heard within the canyon at night. While the origins of the name 'Slaughterhouse Canyon' are debated, with some attributing it to the tale of Luana and others suggesting it came from cattle slaughtering activities in the area, the canyon remains a popular destination for those seeking natural beauty and a touch of the paranormal.
