Discover more about Historic Mohave County Jail

The Historic Mohave County Jail, located in Kingman, Arizona, offers a unique glimpse into the early 20th century. Built between 1909 and 1910, it was designed by the Pauly Jail Building Company and proclaimed the most secure jail in the Arizona Territory at the time. John Mulligan, who also worked on the Brunswick Hotel and Hotel Beale, handled the concrete work. The jail is one of the oldest cast-in-place concrete structures in Kingman. Its features included metal plate floors in the cells, which apparently led jailers to call the cells 'natural lie detectors'. The jail remained in use until 1965 when a new jail was completed in the basement of the courthouse. The Mohave County Courthouse and Jail were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The jail is nestled between the courthouse and the Mohave County Superior Court building. Today, the Mohave County Historical Society is working to add the jail to their family of museums.
