Liberty Bell Arch: A Desert Ringer

Liberty Bell Arch, a natural sandstone formation, resides within Lake Mead National Recreation Area near Willow Beach, Arizona. This unique arch earns its name from its striking resemblance to Philadelphia's iconic Liberty Bell, complete with a 'clapper'. Over millennia, wind and water erosion sculpted this geological wonder, which is more commonly seen in places like Arches National Park.The moderately challenging 5-mile round trip hike to the arch offers stunning views of the colorful canyons carved by the Colorado River and the vast Mojave Desert. Keep an eye out for bighorn sheep, which occasionally roam the area. The trail also passes remnants of a historic magnesium mine dating back to World War II. The best time to hike is during the cooler months (October to April). Be sure to bring plenty of water and sun protection, as there is little to no shade along the trail. Due to extreme summer heat, the trail is often closed from mid-May to late September.While there is no direct river access on this trail, a panoramic viewpoint 1,000 feet above the Colorado River rewards hikers. For a different perspective of the arch, follow the trail towards the back side, where a short scramble leads to a closer vantage point. The trail to Liberty Bell Arch shares a trailhead with White Rock Canyon Trail.
