Discover more about Wyatt Earp Shot Frank Stilwell Marker

Located in Tucson's Historic Fourth Avenue, the Wyatt Earp Shot Frank Stilwell Marker stands as a reminder of the Old West and the famous feud between the Earp brothers and the outlaws known as the "Cowboys". The marker commemorates the spot where, on March 20, 1882, Wyatt Earp, along with Doc Holliday and others, confronted and killed Frank Stilwell. Frank Stilwell was suspected of being involved in the murder of Morgan Earp, Wyatt's brother, just two days prior in Tombstone. Virgil Earp had also been ambushed and maimed months before. In response, Wyatt formed a posse and began what became known as the Earp Vendetta Ride, seeking revenge for the attacks on his brothers. The confrontation with Stilwell in Tucson was a key event in this ride. Accounts vary, but it's generally believed that the Earp posse encountered Stilwell at the Tucson train yard. Stilwell was allegedly waiting in ambush with Ike Clanton. In the ensuing confrontation, Stilwell was shot and killed. Wyatt Earp later admitted to killing Stilwell at close range with a shotgun. The marker itself is located at 410 N Toole Ave, near the Southern Arizona Transportation Museum. The area is known for its vibrant mix of shops, cafes, and art galleries, offering visitors a chance to explore Tucson's culture and history. Nearby attractions include a historic steam locomotive and a free museum, providing additional insights into the region's past.
