Discover more about Brigham City Fort

Brigham City Fort, located near Winslow, Arizona, offers a window into the state's pioneer history. Founded in 1876 by Mormon settlers, it was one of four colonies established along the Little Colorado River as part of Brigham Young's vision to create a chain of Mormon communities stretching from Utah to Mexico. The settlement, initially called Ballinger's Camp, aimed to be a self-sufficient community based on the United Order, a communal economic system. Life in Brigham City was challenging. The settlers faced difficulties in irrigating their crops, leading to frequent crop failures. Despite their efforts to build dams and mills, droughts and floods plagued the community. The settlement was ultimately abandoned by 1881 due to these hardships. Today, visitors can explore the restored ruins of the fort, including partial exterior walls and building foundations. Interpretive signs guide visitors through the site, explaining the settlement's structure, the residents' way of life, and the reasons for its decline. The fort provides a tangible sense of the difficulties faced by pioneers in adapting to the desert environment. The surrounding desert landscape offers a serene backdrop for reflection and photography.
