Discover more about Homolovi State Park

Homolovi State Park, meaning "place of the little hills" in Hopi, is a 4,000-acre park dedicated to preserving and protecting the sacred Hopi archaeological sites. Located just over a mile north of Winslow, Arizona, the park serves as a center for research on the late migration period of the Hopi from the 1200s to the late 1300s. The park protects over 300 Ancestral Puebloan archaeological sites, including four major pueblos. These villages were inhabited by ancestors of the Hopi people, called Hisat'sinom or "long-ago people", who lived here between approximately 1260 and 1400 AD. The fertile floodplain of the Little Colorado River allowed them to grow cotton, corn, beans, and squash. It is believed that the inhabitants traded cotton for pottery with those living on the Hopi Mesas. Today, Hopi tribal members consider Homolovi a sacred ancestral site and make pilgrimages to renew their ties to this land. Visitors can explore two of the largest sites, Homolovi I and Homolovi II, with Homolovi II being the most thoroughly excavated. A network of trails, including a wheelchair-accessible trail at Homolovi II, allows visitors to wander through the ancient villages. Pottery shards are scattered throughout the sites, and petroglyphs adorn the walls and stones. The Visitor Center features exhibits of artifacts, traditional Hopi pottery, carvings, and artwork, providing an introduction to the history and culture of the area.
