Getting There

  • Driving

    The most common way to approach Mount Nebo State Park is by car. From Dardanelle, follow Arkansas Highway 155 west for approximately 7 miles. Be aware that Highway 155 is a winding road with steep grades and hairpin turns; trailers longer than 24 feet are not recommended. There is no fee to enter the park. Parking is available near the visitor center, Sunset Point overlook, and the pool area. Parking is free.

    Once within the park, many attractions are accessible by foot. The Rim Trail and Bench Trail can be accessed from multiple parking areas. Check the park map for trailheads and distances. Be prepared for moderate to strenuous hiking, depending on the trail chosen. Remember to wear appropriate footwear and bring water.

Mount Nebo State Park, rising 1,350 feet above the Arkansas River Valley near Dardanelle, Arkansas, has been a beloved destination for those seeking natural beauty and recreation since the late 19th century. Named after the biblical Mount Nebo, from which Moses viewed the Promised Land, the mountain offers stunning panoramic views of Lake Dardanelle, the Arkansas River, and surrounding mountain ridges. Initially developed as a resort area, the Summit Park Hotel drew visitors from across the nation until it was destroyed by fire in 1918. The park was established in 1928, becoming Arkansas's second state park. During the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) played a crucial role in developing the park's infrastructure between 1933 and 1935. The CCC constructed many of the park's rustic-style cabins, trails, bridges, and pavilions using native stone and logs. Several of these structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the main pavilion and a number of cabins. Today, Mount Nebo State Park offers a variety of activities, including hiking, mountain biking, camping, and simply enjoying the scenic vistas. Over 32 miles of trails wind through the park, catering to hikers and bikers of all skill levels. The Rim Trail, a 3.25-mile loop around the mountaintop, provides breathtaking views, while the Bench Trail offers a more gentle, 3.75-mile path along the mountain's slope. Several newer trails have been added for mountain biking, offering a range of experiences from beginner to advanced. The park features 24 Class B campsites with water and electrical hookups, as well as 10 hike-in tent sites for a more secluded experience. Visitors can also stay in one of the park's 15 cabins, many of which were built by the CCC and offer views of the river valley. Other amenities include a swimming pool (seasonal, fee required), tennis courts, picnic areas, and a visitor center with exhibits about the park's history and natural features.
