Crescent Spring is more than just a picturesque spot; it's a window into Eureka Springs' fascinating history as a 19th-century health resort. The spring, named for the crescent-shaped rock outcropping behind it, was believed to possess healing properties, drawing visitors from far and wide seeking relief from various ailments. In the early days of Eureka Springs, dozens of natural springs flowed from the surrounding hillsides, each with its own unique mineral composition and purported health benefits. Crescent Spring was one of the most revered, second only to Basin Spring, the legendary Indian Healing Spring. The city even installed ultraviolet ray sterilizers at all the principal springs to ensure purity, though these are no longer in existence. By 1886, a wooden gazebo, complete with wooden benches, a boardwalk, and gas street lamps, was constructed to protect the spring and provide a pleasant promenade for visitors. Today, the restored Victorian gazebo and surrounding gardens offer a peaceful retreat where visitors can relax and imagine the town's vibrant past. A stone staircase leads up the hillside, connecting the spring to the historic Crescent Hotel, further linking the spring to the town's grand history. Although the water is no longer considered safe to drink, Crescent Spring remains a significant landmark and a reminder of Eureka Springs' unique heritage.
