Discover more about Old Main

Old Main, originally known as University Hall, is the oldest building on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville. Completed in 1875, it stands as a symbol of the university's enduring legacy and commitment to education. Designed in the Second Empire style by Chicago architect John Mills Van Osdel, it was modeled after the University Hall at the University of Illinois. The building's construction was a significant undertaking, utilizing local materials such as lumber from War Eagle Mill and bricks made from clay dug nearby. The north tower reaches 130 feet, while the south tower stands at 123 feet. Over the years, Old Main has served various functions, housing academic departments, administrative offices, a gymnasium, a chapel, and even sleeping quarters. After falling into disrepair, Old Main was closed in 1981 for safety reasons. A restoration project began in 1989 and was completed in 1991, preserving many original features while updating the building to meet modern standards. Today, Old Main houses the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, its honors program, and several academic departments. Visitors can explore the restored classrooms, admire the architecture, and learn about the building's history. The surrounding Old Main Lawn provides a scenic space to relax and enjoy the campus atmosphere.
