Discover more about Jacksonport State Park

Step back in time at Jacksonport State Park, where the echoes of steamboats and Civil War history resonate through the landscape. This 164.7-acre park preserves the legacy of Jacksonport, a once-thriving river port that served as the Jackson County seat. The park's centerpiece is the meticulously restored 1872 Jacksonport Courthouse, now a museum showcasing exhibits from every significant period of the area's past. Explore displays that detail the town's rise as a commercial hub, its role during the Civil War, and its eventual decline after being bypassed by the railroad. Visitors can also stroll along the Tunstall Riverwalk, a half-mile trail that winds along the White River, offering scenic views and opportunities for bird watching and wildlife spotting. The park further provides a swimming beach, picnic areas, a playground, and a boat launch for enjoying the natural surroundings. Jacksonport's story is one of both prosperity and loss. Founded in the 1820s, the town flourished as a trading center due to its location near the confluence of the Black and White Rivers. Steamboats arrived in 1833, transforming Jacksonport into a bustling port for timber, cotton, and other goods. The town became the county seat in 1852, further solidifying its importance. However, Jacksonport's fortunes changed when the Iron Mountain & Southern Railroad bypassed the town in the 1870s. The town declined as steamboat traffic dwindled, and the county seat was moved to Newport in 1892. Today, Jacksonport State Park stands as a tribute to this once-vibrant community, offering visitors a chance to learn about its history and appreciate its natural beauty.
