Discover more about Haghpat Monastery Complex

Haghpat Monastery, also known as Haghpatavank, is a medieval Armenian monastery complex built between the 10th and 13th centuries. Located in the Lori Province of Armenia, the monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage site, celebrated for its stunning architecture and historical significance. The monastery was founded by Queen Khosrovanuysh, wife of the Bagratid king Ashot III, in 976. Perched on a hillside overlooking the Debed River, Haghpat Monastery was strategically built to provide both protection and a sense of monastic humility. The complex includes several significant structures. The Cathedral of Surb Nshan (Holy Cross), the largest church, was completed in 991 and is a prime example of 10th-century Armenian architecture. Its central dome rests on four imposing pillars, and the exterior walls are adorned with triangular recesses. Inside, a fresco depicts Christ Pantocrator. Other key structures include the Church of St. Gregory, the Church of the Holy Mother of God (St. Astvatsatsin), a bell tower, a refectory, and a scriptorium. Haghpat Monastery was not only a religious center but also a hub of learning and culture. It housed a rich collection of manuscripts and served as a center for copying library manuscripts, providing facilities for study and research. The monastery has faced numerous invasions and natural disasters throughout its history, including earthquakes and attacks by foreign invaders. Despite the damage, much of the complex remains intact, thanks to restoration efforts. Today, visitors can explore the monastery's historic buildings, admire the intricate khachkars, and soak in the serene atmosphere. The site offers a captivating journey through Armenia's medieval monastic legacy. One unique treasure of the Haghpat Monastery is the Amenaprkich (All Savior) khachkar, created in 1273 by a master called Vahram. The elaborately carved cross-stone depicts Jesus on the cross, Mother Mary and Mary Magdalene, the 12 apostles of Christ, and figures of angels.
