Discover more about Amberd fortress

Amberd Fortress, meaning "fortress in the clouds" in Armenian, is a remarkable historical site located on the southern slope of Mount Aragats, at an altitude of 2,300 meters. This strategic location made it one of the primary military-defensive points of the Armenian Kingdom.Founded in the 7th century, construction of the fortress continued through the 10th century under the Kamsarakan and Pahlavuni princely families. Amberd served as a summer residence for Armenian princes and a vital defensive structure. The complex includes defensive walls, a castle, a bathhouse, and the Church of Saint Astvatsatsin (Holy Virgin), built in 1026. The fortress was captured by Seljuks in the 11th century and later destroyed by Mongols in the 13th century. It was briefly reconstructed in the late 13th century before being abandoned in the 14th century.Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins, including the three-story castle built with massive basalt stones and the remarkably intact bathhouse with its advanced heating and water systems. The Church of Saint Astvatsatsin, with its cruciform interior and modest exterior decorations, is also a highlight. Excavations have revealed underground walkways and a sophisticated water supply system. The site offers stunning views of the surrounding canyons, meadows, and the peak of Mount Aragats.
