Khor Virap Monastery, located near the village of Pokr Vedi and close to the Turkish border, is more than just a religious site; it's a symbol of Armenia's enduring faith and history. The monastery's name, meaning "deep dungeon" in Armenian, is derived from the story of St. Gregory the Illuminator, who was imprisoned here in a pit for 13 years for his Christian beliefs. This act of defiance against the pagan King Tiridates III ultimately led to the king's conversion and the declaration of Christianity as the state religion in 301 AD.The site's history dates back to a pagan temple. In the 5th century, a chapel was built over the prison pit, followed by the St. Gevorg Chapel in 642 AD. The current St. Astvatsatsin Church was constructed in 1662. Visitors can descend into the pit where St. Gregory was held, a moving experience that connects them to the monastery's deep history.Khor Virap also offers stunning views of Mount Ararat, which is considered sacred by Armenians. The monastery's location, combined with the breathtaking backdrop of the mountain, makes it a popular spot for photography and pilgrimage. The site embodies the Armenian people's connection to their historical homeland.

Getting There
Public Transport
From Yerevan, take the metro to Sasuntsi Davit station, where you'll find minibuses (marshrutkas) to Ararat. The fare is about 500 AMD. The marshrutka will drop you off in Ararat, from where you can take a taxi to Khor Virap for approximately 250 AMD. Alternatively, you can walk the remaining 1.5 kilometers. Bus #467 goes directly to Khor Virap at 9:00, 14:00, and 18:00 for 500 AMD.
Taxi
A taxi directly from Yerevan to Khor Virap takes about 40-60 minutes and costs approximately 4500 AMD. Taxis are readily available in Yerevan.
Driving
From Yerevan, drive south on the E117 for about 30 kilometers, then take the H11 to Khor Virap. Parking is available near the monastery. Be aware that parking may be limited during peak season.
