Discover more about Khor Virap Monastery

Khor Virap is more than just a monastery; it's a symbol of Armenia's spiritual awakening and a testament to its enduring faith. Located in the Ararat plain, close to the Turkish border, it offers unparalleled views of the majestic Mount Ararat, a national symbol. The monastery's history is deeply intertwined with St. Gregory the Illuminator, who was imprisoned here for 13 years in a deep pit, or 'khor virap,' for his Christian beliefs.King Tiridates III, initially a persecutor of Christians, imprisoned Gregory for refusing to renounce his faith and offer sacrifices to pagan gods. Legend says that Gregory survived his imprisonment through the kindness of a local woman who secretly brought him food. Later, when the king fell ill, his sister had a dream that only Gregory could cure him. Gregory was released, healed the king, and subsequently converted Tiridates and the Armenian nation to Christianity in 301 AD, making Armenia the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as its state religion. The monastery complex includes the St. Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) Church, built in the 17th century, and the Chapel of St. Gregory, constructed in the 7th century over the site of the dungeon. Visitors can descend into the actual pit where St. Gregory was held, a truly humbling and somewhat claustrophobic experience. The site also features khachkars (intricately carved cross-stones) and offers panoramic views of the Ararat Valley. Khor Virap is not only a pilgrimage destination but also a place to appreciate the serene beauty of the Armenian landscape and reflect on the country's rich religious history.
