Explore Kecharis Monastery in Tsaghkadzor: a medieval Armenian monastic complex with stunning architecture and rich history.

4.8

Kecharis Monastery, located in the popular ski resort town of Tsaghkadzor, is a captivating journey into Armenia's rich medieval past. Founded in the 11th century by the Pahlavuni dynasty, the complex grew into a significant religious and cultural hub during the 12th and 13th centuries. The monastery comprises four churches, two chapels, and a cemetery adorned with intricate khachkars (cross-stones) from the 12th and 13th centuries. The main temple, the Church of Saint Grigor Lusavorich (the Illuminator), was erected in 1013 by Grigor Magistros Pahlavuni. Its architecture exemplifies the domed-hall style prevalent during Armenia's feudal period. The interior is divided into three spaces, with a central cupola that was rebuilt after earthquake damage in 1927. South of St. Grigor stands the Church of Surb Nshan, built in the 11th century and restored in 1223. The Katoghike Church, commissioned by Prince Vasak Khaghbakian, showcases a cross-in-square layout with two-story chapels. The Church of the Holy Resurrection, built in 1220, served as the burial place for abbots. Throughout its history, Kecharis has faced destruction, including Mongol invasions, but has been consistently restored. Today, fully restored, Kecharis Monastery stands as a testament to Armenia's enduring religious and architectural heritage, offering visitors a glimpse into its vibrant past.
