Discover more about Saint Gregory The Illuminator Cathedral

Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral, also known as the Yerevan Cathedral, is a prominent religious building in Yerevan, Armenia. Consecrated in 2001, it stands as the largest cathedral of the Armenian Apostolic Church and a testament to Armenia's Christian heritage. The cathedral commemorates the 1700th anniversary of Armenia's adoption of Christianity in 301 AD, a pivotal moment attributed to St. Gregory the Illuminator. The construction of the cathedral was initiated by Catholicos Vazgen I and later realized under Catholicos Karekin I, with the ground-blessing ceremony taking place in 1997. Architect Stepan Kurkchyan designed the complex, blending traditional Armenian architectural motifs with modern design principles. The cathedral complex includes three churches: the main Cathedral, which seats 1,700, and the Chapels of Saint Tiridates the King and Saint Ashkhen the Queen, each accommodating 150 people. A belfry tower with over 30 arches stands at the entrance. The cathedral houses relics of Saint Gregory the Illuminator, brought from Naples, Italy, in 2000. The main church was built with donations from Richard Alexander Manoogian and Louise Manoogian Simone, in memory of their parents, Alex and Marie Manoogian. The two chapels were funded by Nazar and Artemis Nazarian, and Kevork and Linda Kevorkian, while the bell tower was erected with donations from Eduardo Eurnekian. The cathedral is built from orange-colored tufa stones. Located in the Kentron District, the cathedral is visible from many parts of Yerevan and is near the General Andranik metro station. Due to renovations at the Mother Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin, the Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral often hosts patriarchal liturgies and other significant ceremonies.
