Discover more about Hooiberg Lookout

Hooiberg, a distinctive cone-shaped hill, rises 541 feet (165 meters) above sea level in the heart of Aruba. Its Dutch name, meaning "haystack," reflects its resemblance to a traditional haystack. While not the island's highest point (that title belongs to Jamanota), Hooiberg's central, isolated location makes it a prominent and recognizable landmark, even featured on Aruba's coat of arms as a symbol of the island rising from the sea. The climb to the summit is a popular activity, involving a moderately challenging hike up a well-maintained concrete staircase. The staircase was originally built in 1951 with 900 steps, but after erosion, it was renovated in 1991 and now consists of approximately 587 wider and longer steps. Along the way, hikers can observe the unique flora and fauna of Aruba, including cacti, aloe vera, and divi-divi trees. At the summit, visitors are rewarded with stunning 360-degree views of Aruba. On a clear day, it's possible to see the coastline, nearby geological formations, and even the coast of Venezuela. The summit also features telecommunications towers, essential for the island's communication services. Hooiberg is a cultural touchstone, beloved by locals and tourists alike, offering not only exercise but also a connection to Aruba's natural beauty and history.
