Discover more about Water Tower Oranjestad

The Water Tower of Oranjestad is an iconic historical landmark that reflects Aruba's rich heritage and architectural beauty. Constructed in 1939, the tower was essential in supplying water to the growing community, symbolizing progress and development during a transformative era for the island. At the beginning of the twentieth century, water scarcity prompted Curaçao to establish the Landswatervoorzieningsdienst (LWV) in 1928 to provide potable water to Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao. In 1933, Aruba took the initiative to construct its own seawater distillation plant in Balashi, marking the start of Aruba's independent water distribution infrastructure. To address low water pressure during peak hours, the decision was made to construct two water towers. The San Nicolas water tower opened on August 14th, 1939, followed by the Oranjestad water tower on November 4th, 1939. The tower's architecture, characterized by its sturdy brick structure and elegant Art Deco design, offers a striking contrast to the modern buildings surrounding it, making it a great spot for photography enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy picturesque views of the vibrant Oranjestad area and the Caribbean Sea. The site is a fantastic place to relax and soak in the local atmosphere. The Oranjestad water tower underwent restoration in 2011 and currently houses the offices for the Objection Advisory Board LAR. The tower is a reminder of how far Aruba has come while still preserving its unique charm.
