Quadirikiri Cave: A Subterranean Wonder

Explore the enchanting Quadirikiri Cave in Arikok National Park: limestone formations, ancient petroglyphs, and a touch of Aruban folklore.

4.7

Quadirikiri Cave, located in Arikok National Park, offers a glimpse into Aruba's geological history and Amerindian heritage. The cave extends approximately 490 feet (150 meters) and is characterized by two large chambers illuminated by sunlight streaming through openings in the cave's ceiling. These openings were believed to be the path to heaven in local folklore. The cave is adorned with stalactites and stalagmites, formed over centuries by mineral-rich water. Keep an eye out for the ancient Amerindian petroglyphs etched into the limestone walls, offering a glimpse into the island's pre-Columbian past. The cave is also home to a colony of harmless bats, adding to the unique ecosystem within. According to local legend, the Quadirikiri Caves are associated with a tale involving an Indian chief's daughter who fell in love with someone her father disapproved of. She was imprisoned in the Quadirikiri Cave, while her lover was confined to the nearby Huliba Cave (Tunnel of Love). The legend says the lovers met in secret underground, but tragically died, their spirits escaping through the holes in the cave roof.
