Spanish Lagoon: A Sanctuary of Nature and History

Spanish Lagoon, or Spaans Lagoen in Papiamento and Dutch, is a captivating coastal bay and wetland area located approximately 10 kilometers southeast of Oranjestad, Aruba. Designated as a Ramsar site in 1980, it is recognized for its ecological significance and was later included within the boundaries of Arikok National Park in February 2017. Formed during the last ice age, the lagoon stretches about 2 kilometers in length and ranges from 200 to 500 meters in width. Its unique tidal influence has fostered a rare ecosystem characterized by tidal mudflats and mangrove swamps. These mangroves provide a crucial habitat, serving as a feeding and breeding ground for various bird species, reef fish, and crustaceans. Spanish Lagoon boasts a rich history, having served as a primary entry point for Spanish settlers in the 15th century. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of Aruba's colonial past, including ancient Amerindian shell middens dating back to 1465-1280 BC, and the ruins of the Balashi Gold Mill from the 19th century. Frenchman's Pass, a narrow passage near the lagoon, adds to the area's mystique with tales of French pirates and Indian resistance. Birdwatchers will find themselves in paradise, with over 80 bird species inhabiting the area, including herons, pelicans, and the island's iconic burrowing owl, the Shoco. The lagoon's calm waters are also ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding, allowing visitors to explore its serene environment and observe the diverse marine life. Snorkeling is another popular activity, with Mangel Halto, located at the coastline before heading into the lagoon, offering excellent opportunities to discover the underwater world.
