Discover more about Beehive Corner

Located at the bustling intersection of King William Street and Rundle Mall, Beehive Corner stands as a testament to Adelaide's rich history and architectural heritage. The building's story began in 1849 with a draper's shop called 'The Beehive,' established by Brewer and Robertson, symbolizing a busy trading center. The current building, constructed between 1895 and 1896, replaced the original structure and was designed by architects George Klewitz Soward and Thomas English. Its ornate Gothic Revival style, unusual for a commercial building, features a distinctive corner turret shaped like a beehive, topped with a gilded bee. The words 'Beehive Corner 1895' are carved into the turret. The building has four shops facing King William Street and three facing Rundle Street. Throughout its history, Beehive Corner has been a popular shopping hub. In the early 1900s, it housed a chocolate store owned by Carl Stratmann, which was later acquired by Alfred Haigh, marking the beginning of Haigh's Chocolates. Today, Haigh's Chocolates continues to operate in Beehive Corner, adding to its cultural significance. In 1998, the building's facade was refurbished, ensuring that its unique architectural features are preserved for future generations. Beehive Corner is a State Heritage Place, recognized for its architectural and historical importance. For over a century, the phrase 'Meet you at the Beehive Corner' has been a popular way to arrange meetings in the city.
