The Gap: Gateway to Alice Springs

The Gap, or Heavitree Gap, serves as the southern gateway to Alice Springs, carving its way through the imposing MacDonnell Ranges. Known as Ntaripe to the local Arrernte people, this natural break has long been a significant site. It was named by William Mills after his former school in Heavitree, Devon. For the Arrernte people, The Gap is a sacred site, holding deep cultural and spiritual meaning. Historically, women avoided using it as a thoroughfare before the road and railway were constructed. The area has been captured in paintings by notable artists such as Albert Namatjira, showcasing its timeless beauty. Today, The Gap is a bustling entry point to Alice Springs, accommodating the Stuart Highway, the railway, and the often-dry Todd River. Travelers passing through are greeted by the rugged beauty of the MacDonnell Ranges and a sense of entering the heart of the Australian Outback. The Heavitree Gap Police Station was established in 1886, marking the first permanent police base in Central Australia. Though the original buildings are gone, the site remains a historically significant location.
